We’re taking a moment to revisit Canada’s largest ghost gear recovery project, Loreva 2022 project. Making a significant impact in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Thanks to a dedicated effort by our trusted partners at Centre de recherche sur les milieux insulaires et maritimes (CERMIM). This project was led by CERMIM and focused on the retrieval of abandoned and lost fishing gear, also known as ghost gear. Showcasing the effectiveness of cutting-edge ROV technology in real-world environmental restoration efforts.
140 Dives: 50 Crab Traps and 8km of Rope Recovered
CERMIM successfully recovered 50 crab traps and over 8km of rope during 140 dives at depths of up to 300 feet. The operation took place off the coast of the Magdalen Islands. A vital marine ecosystem in Canada, where ghost gear presents a serious threat to marine life, including fish, seals, and other sea creatures.
The SEAMOR Marine ROV is a leader and plays a pivotal role in locating lost fishing gear, attaching ropes for safe retrieval, and ensuring that the gear was removed without causing harm to the environment. The recovered equipment wasn’t just removed from the water—it was also carefully sorted. Items were either returned to the fishermen for reuse or disassembled for repurposing, contributing to the circular economy of the Magdalen Islands.
This project is an excellent example of how technology and collaboration come together to address pressing environmental issues. By utilizing durable, reliable ROV systems, we were able to perform a meticulous recovery operation that helps mitigate the ongoing problem of marine pollution caused by abandoned gear.
We are proud to have played a part in this incredible project that highlights the importance of marine conservation, sustainability, and the protection of our oceans. A huge thank you to CERMIM for producing this insightful video. An additional thanks to all partners who contributed to the success of LOREVA 2022.
203 Crab Traps and 25km of Rope
CERMIM continued with their ghost gear recovery efforts in 2023 and were able to retrieve 203 Crab Traps and over 25km of rope! SEAMOR ROVs are being used for the greater good and we can’t wait to see what can be recovered from our oceans in the coming years.
